Since 2006,  Putumayo supports Tomas, a Secoya from the community of Bellavista. In 2009 he succesfully graduated in the city of Iquitos as a nurse. In august 2010 he signed his contract and was appointed as nurse in Bellavista. This way he will be able to provide medical care to his people in their own language. Especially children, women and elders only speak their mother tongue, pai cocua, and understand little Spanish.

Until recently the Peruvian state had appointed a mestizo nurse who only spoke Spanish. This meant the existence of a language and cultural barrier in the service of medical care. This nurse was sent away because of a case of abuse.
